Human Swine Influenza
What is Human Swine Influenza?
Human Swine influenza is a respiratory illness that causes symptoms similar to those of the human season flu. Symptoms include: fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and sore throat. Some children have reported vomiting and diarrhea.
How is Human Swine Influenza spread?
It can be spread through the air (coughing or sneezing) or on surfaces (can live up to one hour on a hard surface) from an infected person.
Is the Human Swine Influenza Contagious?
Yes, it is very contagious. It is contagious the same way seasonal flu is contagious.
Are all cases of Human Swine Influenza severe?
No, to date all cases reported in Ontario are recovering well, and are much milder than those reported in Mexico.
How can I protect myself from being infected?
* Wash your hands often!
* Cough and sneeze into your arm or sleeve, or a tissue and wash your hands with soap
and warm water or alcohol based hand sanitizer!
* Maintain good health habits-nutrition and rest.
* If you are sick stay home.
* Avoid contact with sick people.
* If you have symptoms and have traveled to an infected area in the last 24 to 48 hours

* Get your annual flu shot!
