On June 23, 2009, Batchewana First Nation gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Health Centre being constructed in the Rankin Community. Chief Dean Sayers explained the history that led to the construction of the facility and made the following statement; "Batchewana Chief and Council celebrate, along with our people, this momentous occasion. this new Health Centre will ultimately improve the quality of health, not only for every Batchewana First Nation member, but people throughout the region." "We want to particularly thank the federal governments for this financial support for this project." Tony Martin, MP attended the ceremony to show his support and made the following statement; "this project is significant and important in many ways. Anishinabek taking more control over the delivery of health services. It is driven and developed by the community itself and will provide space for the many health centred services already delivered through the Batchewana Band. The focus on health and wellness reflected in the architecture and materials used is an example for all of us as we try to bring a more holistic approach to our lives and relationships." It is anticipated that the new facility will be ready for occupancy by Fall, 2010. |
